Primary Care

General Primary Care

Our practice is open to all adults, from late teens to seniors. We are a general internal medicine practice, dealing with common conditions such as diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. Dr. Lyter not only has significant experience in addressing the health issues of young adults, but also has spent many years providing geriatric care. Trained initially as an AIDS-oncologist and having worked for hospice, Dr. Lyter has spent significant time supporting those with advanced disease and in addressing end-of-life issues.

Our Health Center welcomes the opportunity to work with LGBTQ+ individuals and their friends and families. The question is often asked: “How is primary care for the LGBTQ community any different from care for everyone else?”. For the most part it isn’t. We conduct annual physicals, recommend standard preventive screening and immunizations, treat chronic illnesses with state-of-the-art and evidence-based protocols, prescribe common medications and strive to be available for same-day treatment of acute illnesses. What may be different is that we can offer an office setting where one’s sexuality does not need to be hidden or is overlooked. There may be concerns about risk for infections, difficulties in relationships or other personal concerns that need to be discussed without fear of judgment or lack of understanding. There are some differences in LGBTQ+ care that are often overlooked in other settings. Screening for sexually transmissible infections is different for gay men than straight, including anal Paps which can detect HPV-related dysplasia or cancer. Preventive recommendations for transgender clients on hormone replacement need to focus on both preferred gender and birth gender biology. Often primary care clinicians not experienced with LGBTQ care are unfamiliar with these and other unique needs.

We also invite those who may be from outside the area and live in Tampa Bay on a part-time basis. We frequently provide care in collaboration with their main primary care providers and can follow-through with any recommended labs or exams while here in Florida.

We therefore welcome anyone who is seeking primary care to join our practice, including those who do not identify as LGBTQ+. Please call us at 813-518-0881 for more information or to schedule an appointment. You can also contact us through the patient portal link on this website.
